Southlake Council to Approve Rec Center Site Plan

by Adolfo Pesquera

Southlake (Tarrant Co.) – City Council is expected to approve the site plan Tuesday for The Marq Southlake Champions Club recreation center at Bicentennial Park, as well as a new tennis center.

Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture Inc. prepared the site plan and structure elevations and renderings for Champions Club, a two-story, 84,070-square-foot building and recreational complex on 4.75 acres. This is phase two of a project that began with the construction of Legends Hall, a 22,408-square-foot facility that is adjacent to the project site.

Legends Hall was completed in December 2015. Champions Club will include spaces for performance training, a gymnasium, indoor jog/walk track, indoor aquatics, indoor playground, party rooms, child watch and multipurpose classrooms for programs.

It will be located in the 200 and 300 blocks of Shady Oaks Drive. The combined Legends Hall and Champions Club site totals 108,000 square feet of indoor facility space, and it will have a total of 269 parking spaces.

On Aug. 10, the Planning & Zoning Commission recommended requests from city staff for variances. The first variance would permit a driveway stacking depth of 27.5 feet instead of 100 feet. The other variances deal with the use of LED lighting for nighttime games at the proposed sport field.

According to the architect’s narrative, “the building design utilizes a variety of materials including (80 percent) masonry, glass, metal, EFIS, and asphalt shingle roofing.”

Champions Club also has a very extensive landscaping plan that includes gardens adorning the entrance facade, as well as at the exit leading to the amphitheater and soccer field.

Haydon Building Corporation is the partner general contractor. Construction is expected to begin in late 2016 with a md-2018 opening date.

Pacheco Koch has been performing the civil engineering.

Tennis Center

Next on the Aug. 16 agenda is consideration of Barker Rinker Seacat’s site plan for the Southlake Tennis Center. The new 6,169-square-foot facility will replace the existing 4,000-square-foot facility. It includes a 2,245-square-foot back covered patio and five shade structures where existing bleacher seating is located.

The tennis center facility will be a single story building with a 27.5-foot height.

Located at 450 W. Southlake Boulevard, this is scheduled to be Phase 3 in the Bicentennial Park improvements plan.

“The Southlake Tennis Center facility will include space for a full service Pro Shop, Club Meeting Room, Men and Women Locker Rooms, and staff offices,” the architect’s narrative stated.

Architecturally, it will be similar in design to Champions Club. Construction is expected to being in late 2016 with a late 2017 opening date.
