College Station (Brazos County) — The College Station City Council has entered into a construction contract for improvements at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

The city recently approved a $1,662,880.49 contract with local construction company JaCody Construction, LP for significant improvements and additions to the playability of the park, located at 3101 Harvey Road.

Construction will focus on improving drainage at the park because drainage has been an ongoing issue.

According to city officials, this will resolve the issue of standing water between fields one through six and the entrance of Harvey Road during a severe rainstorm.

The city sought to have the fields ready to play for locals and guests as quickly as possible after a storm.

Failing asphalt roundabouts throughout the park will also be addressed by having them removed, sub graded and improving the curb, and then concrete will be poured back due to the high volume of traffic and sustainability.

An addition to the park will be a second restroom on the Harvey Road side of the park located just east of Merchant Marine Field (field 5).

The project had initially been contracted for $1,934,233.26 prior to the current pandemic, but the city cited recent economic concerns to decrease the contract by $271,352.51.

City officials worked with JaCody Construction, LP to remove portions of the project that weren’t deemed essential to improving drainage.

The amenities that will no longer be included in the project include two playgrounds and their associated surfacing, seat walls, walkways and shade canopies.

Five competitive proposals were received and examined by the City of College Station Purchasing Division and the College Station Parks and Recreation Department.

Among those who submitted a bid for the project were RM Dudley Construction LTD out of College Station, G Hyatt Construction Inc. out of Leander, Green Texas Builders out of Austin, Larry Young Paving Inc. out of Bryan, and the awarded company, JaCody Construction, LP.
