San Antonio (Bexar County) — A new era for downtown San Antonio is officially underway after Bexar County voters approved Propositions A and B, measures that authorize public funding for Project Marvel — a sweeping redevelopment plan anchored by a $1.4 billion arena that will become the new home of the San Antonio Spurs.
The vote on Tuesday marks the final approval needed to launch the project, which aims to transform the area surrounding the Alamodome, Henry B. González Convention Center, and Hemisfair into a modern sports and entertainment district. The proposal enables the city and county to utilize a portion of existing hotel occupancy and rental car taxes to cover infrastructure costs associated with the arena, ensuring the Spurs remain in San Antonio for decades to come.
Project Marvel is envisioned as part of a $3–4 billion long-term downtown redevelopment project, combining the new Spurs arena with upgrades to the aging Alamodome, expanded green spaces, public plazas, and pedestrian-friendly connections to the River Walk and the Tower of the Americas. City officials stated that the project will stimulate economic growth, tourism, and year-round events in the city’s core.
The San Antonio City Council had previously approved a non-binding term sheet for the project in August by a 7-4 vote, clearing the way for formal negotiations between the Spurs organization and city officials. Spurs CEO R.C. Buford and Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai both praised voters for supporting the investment, emphasizing that Project Marvel will create thousands of construction jobs and strengthen San Antonio’s position as a premier destination for sports and entertainment.
