Houston (Harris County) — The University of Houston (UH) is moving forward with its new Population Health Complex, set to open in fall 2026 in the city’s Texas Medical Center.
A university spokesperson confirmed the timeline and location of the project to the Houston Business Journal, which will renovate a 50,000-square-foot building at 1441 Moursund St. to serve as the permanent home of UH’s Population Health Initiative.
Launched in 2022, the initiative focuses on researching how socioeconomic and environmental factors—such as food access and neighborhood conditions—affect health outcomes. The new complex will allow for expanded research and public health programming. A spokesperson added that UH is also considering housing additional programs aligned with the initiative’s mission, though no final decisions have been made.
UH has owned the property since 1980, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Construction costs for the project are estimated at $23.6 million, per a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) filing dated July 11. The total project budget is expected to reach $30.5 million, though TDLR filings are preliminary and subject to change.
Construction on the project began on July 14 and is expected to be complete by January 1, 2026. The local office of Page Southerland Page, Inc., managed the architectural aspects of the project. Alex Pena, a project manager at UH, is spearheading the project.
Located in one of the world’s largest medical centers, the new complex is poised to strengthen UH’s footprint in public health research and improve long-term health equity across the region.
