San Antonio (Bexar County) –The Texas Department of Transportation, along with state, local and special guests, commemorated the start of construction for the I-35 NEX Central project with a groundbreaking yesterday.
The $1.5 billion Texas Clear Lanes project aims to increase mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety for drivers with 9.5 miles of transportation improvements from I-410 North in Bexar County to FM 3009 in Guadalupe County.
The ceremony was led by Texas Transportation Chairman J. Bruce Bugg, Jr., who was joined by TxDOT District Engineer Gina Gallegos, P.E., Texas Sen. Donna Campbell, Texas Sen. José Menéndez, State Rep. John Kuempel, State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, State Rep. Steve Allison and State Rep. Elizabeth “Liz” Campos.
“I-35 is one of the most congested roadways in Texas,” said Chairman Bugg. “This will improve safety and mobility, address the anticipated growth in traffic and reduce travel time for drivers.”
The I-35 NEX Central project includes added capacity with new elevated lanes, including high-occupancy vehicle lanes, and will provide flyovers to I-410 North and Loop 1604 West.
“We would not be here today without the support of our partners, stakeholders and community members,” said Gallegos. “We look forward to continuing that partnership throughout the project’s duration.”
I-35 NEX Central is the first of three expansion projects along a 20-mile stretch of I-35 from just north of AT&T Center Parkway to FM 1103.
The contractor Alamo NEX Construction, LLC has already begun preliminary work on the project, including geotechnical drilling and utility potholing. The project is anticipated to be completed in 2027.
