San Antonio (Bexar County) — City Council has approved a $15 million construction contract with F.A. Nunnelly Co. to build a new veterinary hospital and renovate the existing clinic at the city’s Animal Care Services (ACS) campus on the West Side. The project includes a new 14,500 square-foot hospital and renovations to the current 3,000-square-foot clinic, expanding the total medical footprint to roughly 17,000 square feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in February, with completion targeted for fall 2027.
The new hospital will be built adjacent to the existing ACS clinic near the intersection of Highway 151 and Old Highway 90. Designed to address severe space constraints, the facility will significantly expand treatment capacity for the roughly 32,000 animals that pass through the shelter each year. The hospital will increase kennel space for animals awaiting treatment or recovery from 73 to 171 and add in-house diagnostic capabilities, including X-ray equipment.
F.A. Nunnelly Co., a San Antonio-based general contractor, will deliver the project in phases to allow operations to continue. Staff will work out of the existing clinic during construction of the new hospital, then relocate to the new building while the current clinic undergoes approximately six months of renovation. Once complete, the renovated space will primarily house staff offices and isolation areas for sick or contagious animals.
The project is funded through voter-approved 2022 bond dollars and was championed by District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez following site visits that highlighted overcrowding and limited treatment capacity. City officials said the expanded facility is expected to improve animal care outcomes, increase spay and neuter capacity, and help reduce the number of animals euthanized due to medical limitations.
