Katy (Waller County) — Johnson Development is planning an expansive new amenity complex at its Grange master-planned community in Katy, combining recreation, retail, and community gathering spaces into a single, 20-acre destination.

Known as Ricestead, the development will serve as the social and commercial heart of Grange, offering resort-style amenities alongside local retail and open space. At its center will be a large village green designed for concerts, farmers’ markets, and seasonal events. Overlooking the green will be Harvest Hall, a multipurpose clubhouse that includes a fitness center, community room, co-working areas, a conference room, and offices for the homeowners’ association and lifestyle staff.

The complex will feature a resort-style pool, a separate lap pool, a playground, and a six-court open-air pickleball pavilion. The section of Ricestead along Franz Road — one of Grange’s key corridors — will include a mix of retail spaces intended to reflect the community’s character and encourage local business partnerships.

“Ricestead will be far more than an amenity center,” said Jacob W. Rice, vice president and general manager of Grange. “Our vision is for it to become the heart of the community — a modern-day town square where neighbors naturally come together.”

Designed to highlight the region’s agrarian heritage, Ricestead will incorporate natural materials, weathered facades, exposed wooden beams, and shaded porches. The site plan also emphasizes connectivity, with trails, bridges, and pedestrian corridors linking nearby lakes, waterways, and residential areas.

Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with completion anticipated in 2027.
