Houston (Harris County) — The University of Houston kicked off the 2025 football season with the unveiling of its new Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center.
DLR Group and its architectural partner, Page, designed the 158,000-square-foot transformation. The $130 million project is multifaceted, comprising of an all-encompassing football development facility, new in-stadium premium hospitality offerings, a rooftop terrace, and a new videoboard. The three-story facility strategically frames the west end of TDECU Stadium, which is expected to create an elite in-stadium gameday experience for all.
“The new Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center and upgrades to TDECU Stadium are a product of what great design and great partnerships can produce. Every space we touched in the project aimed to bring a heightened experience to the user, whether it be the football team training day in and day out, or the Cougar fans who will enjoy a new immersive gameday atmosphere,” said Don Barnum, a senior principal at Global Sports Leader.
The Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center provides the Houston football program with a comprehensive training facility for its student-athletes. It includes a new locker room, weight room, team meeting rooms and auditorium, sports medicine and hydrotherapy spaces, a team dining area, fueling stations, an equipment room, and coaches’ and football operations offices. The building supports the entire student-athlete experience with academic services, study spaces, recovery areas, and a student-athlete lounge.
“This project is a gamechanger for our program and gives us a competitive advantage when it comes to recruiting premier athletes and preparing them for elite success on and off the field,” said Houston Football Head Coach Willie Fritz.
The design also gives Houston fans additional premium hospitality experience opportunities. The project adds 30,000 SF of premium seating options through 14 suites, a 450-seat club and lounge, and a 350-seat rooftop terrace that overlooks John M. O’Quinn Field. Designers tailored the spaces to the University of Houston using custom experiential graphics and thoughtful consideration of the school’s iconic brand.
“The Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center is a state-of-the-art facility,” Vice President of Athletics Eddie Nuñez said. “It gives Houston a chance to be the best we can be in every aspect, on the field, off the field, in the classroom, nutrition-wise, and training-wise. Our football student-athletes have the tools to be the best they can be. This isn’t just about football. This is about athletics. This project has ripple effects across our department. This facility will allow us to do more with our current facility for every other program to allow every University of Houston team a chance to compete at the highest level.”
The project unfolded in phases and was completed within an aggressive timeline of just 20 months. Before the 2024 season, a new scoreboard was installed in the west end zone. The 7,200-square-foot video board is the second-largest in the Big 12 Conference. The stadium remained open and operational throughout the 2024 season and for the duration of the project.
