Fort Worth (Tarrant County) — After thousands of residents shared their ideas and priorities during the Park & Recreation Department’s (PARD) Play Big! community engagement campaign, the GREENprint Fort Worth, Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Public Realm Master Plan was approved by City Council on May 13.
Through public meetings, surveys, pop-up events and interactive tools, Fort Worth residents played a vital role in shaping the future of parks and public spaces. While the name has evolved from the Play Big! campaign to GREENprint Fort Worth, the community’s input remains at the heart of the plan.
“This plan belongs to the people of Fort Worth,” said Park & Recreation Director Dave Lewis. “It reflects what we heard throughout the Play Big! engagement process and outlines a strategic vision for the next decade of parks, recreation and open space investment in our city.”
GREENprint Fort Worth outlines a mission, vision and set of goals that focus on equity, sustainability, connectivity and quality of life. It includes strategies to improve access to nature, support youth and senior programs, protect natural resources, enhance trail systems and create welcoming public spaces for all.
At the heart of the plan are five transformative ideas designed to guide Fort Worth through the next decade of growth:
- New park and public realm typologies that respond to the city’s rapidly changing dynamics.
- A green connectivity network that links the entire system without depending on a car.
- A stronger emphasis on living with nature to extend the benefits of the local ecosystem citywide.
- A grand gathering place that reconnects the city with the Trinity River.
- A new era of programming that fosters engagement, connection and activation across public spaces.
This 10-year master plan will serve as a comprehensive guide for parkland, recreation programming, trail systems, open space preservation and public realm improvements.
