As the COVID-19 Pandemic wreaks havoc across the county, VBX is working to keep our members informed and assess the short-term and long-term impact on our local construction industry. While our members remain our top priority, we will do our best to share information with the entire construction community to help you navigate this unprecedented situation.
What areas have issued Shelter-in-Place Declarations?
Thus far, Gov. Greg Abbott has left it to local officials to decide how and when to issue orders for residents to stay at home. Currently VBX is aware of seventeen counties that have implemented this measure, and more are likely to follow suit:
Do construction companies have to comply with Shelter-in-Place?
There is considerable confusion about whether the construction industry is considered an “essential service” and therefore exempt from Shelter-in-Place requirements. Most Declarations are fairly clear about exempting construction companies involved in maintaining infrastructure, i.e. road builders, utility workers, electrical and mechanical contractors, however others are more ambiguous about the definition of “essential workers”. There are significant fines being imposed for non-compliance, so review your local declarations (links above) carefully to determine whether your business is exempt from the Shelter-in-Place requirements.
