If you’ve been bidding work across Texas this year, you’ve probably noticed something changing.
Not necessarily more projects.
But larger, more complex projects with higher budgets, longer schedules, and broader opportunities for contractors across multiple trades.
That’s exactly what the latest VBX Mid-Year Construction Report confirms.
Comparing the first six months of 2026 with the same period in 2025, Texas construction activity remained remarkably steady in project count—but total construction value nearly tripled. Total tracked construction value reached approximately $188 billion, while overall project volume held near 5,000 projects statewide.
That combination tells an important story.
The Texas market isn’t simply getting busier.
It’s getting larger.
Five Takeaways from the Report
1. Infrastructure Continues to Drive Texas
Utilities, transportation, manufacturing, and wastewater projects accounted for much of the increase in construction value.
Power infrastructure, transmission projects, highways, airports, semiconductor facilities, and water infrastructure are fueling billions of dollars in construction opportunities across the state.
2. Education Still Leads in Project Volume
Schools continue to provide one of the most consistent pipelines of bidding opportunities.
Education represented nearly 37% of all tracked projects, making it the largest market sector by project count.
3. Private Investment Has Accelerated
One of the biggest surprises in this year’s report is the dramatic increase in private construction activity.
Private investment increased by more than 1,000%, largely driven by massive industrial developments and data center expansion occurring across Texas.
4. Data Centers Are Reshaping Construction
Artificial Intelligence and cloud computing continue to create unprecedented demand for new data center campuses.
VBX has identified approximately 248 planned data center projects throughout Texas, with major concentrations in North Texas, Central Texas, and West Texas.
These projects don’t just benefit one specialty.
They create opportunities for:
- Electrical Contractors
- Mechanical / HVAC
- Concrete Contractors
- Civil Contractors
- Steel Erectors
- Fire Protection
- Utility Infrastructure
…and dozens of supporting trades.
5. Winning Starts Earlier
One trend continues to grow:
Contractors who engage earlier in the project lifecycle are putting themselves in stronger competitive positions.
Monitoring projects during planning, design, and pre-bid stages allows firms to build relationships before the invitation to bid is issued and identify opportunities months before many competitors become aware of them.
What This Means for Texas Contractors
Whether you’re a general contractor, subcontractor, supplier, architect, engineer, or project owner, today’s market is increasingly driven by information.
Knowing where construction dollars are flowing—and identifying emerging opportunities before the competition—can make a significant difference in your business development efforts.
