San Antonio (Bexar County) — The University of Texas at San Antonio has been approved for a $20 million pandemic-related allocation to upgrade air control and other environment technologies in classrooms at 14 buildings.

The classrooms will receive new technology, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting, furniture, flooring and paint.

The UT System Board of Regents agreed in late August to amend the current Capital Improvement Program to include the project and appropriate funds.

This action was in response to a recommendation from the executive vice chancellors for Academic Affairs and Business Affairs, which stated, “HVAC infrastructure is needed in older classrooms to provide adequate air changes to help address and minimize airborne infection. These renovations are associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus. The pandemic has created a fundamental shift in the need for flexible instruction and innovative use of technology in the classroom.”

UTSA currently has 131 buildings on four campuses. Most classrooms have not been updated to current technology since they were built. This is considered a repair and rehabilitation project.

Approval of the design development plans and authorization of the expenditure of funds will be considered at later dates.

  • Design Development Approval: November 2021
  • Construction Notice to Proceed: April 2022
  • Anticipated Substantial Completion: July 2022

The budget summary reserves $5,317,905 for building costs (construction). The cost of fixed equipment is $10,990,948. Furniture and movable equipment is $1,252,791. Allocated funds for architectural design services is $429,948; for project management, $755,865; institutionally managed work, $118,220; CIP support services, $200,000; and project contingency, $934,323.

The total gross square feet of classrooms to be addressed is 67,856 SF.

The project delivery method was to be by competitive sealed proposals. UTSA has delegated authority of institutional management of construction projects under the continued oversight of the Office of Capital Projects.
