The corona virus and subsequent shelter in place government orders are not yet affecting commercial construction in Texas, since construction is considered an essential service. Cano Health appears determined to proceed in the new few months with the renovations.
Luna Middleman, just yesterday (March 24) registered the projects with the State of Texas. The architect submitted estimated start of construction and completion dates for the following locations.
100 S. Zarzamora Street has a tentative start date of May 4 and completion date of Sept. 11. This is for a vacant store location in a West Side strip center. The estimated project cost is $750,000 and the scope of work includes 17,071 square feet.
6623 S. Zarzamora Street has a tentative start date of May 4 and completion date of Sept. 11. This is in a recently renovated 40,000 SF shopping center. Bexar Capital LLC acquired the property as a warehouse in 2018 and converted it to retail use. Cano Health is also spending $750,000 on this renovation of 12,342 square feet.
7031 Marbach Road has a tentative start date of May 4 and completion date of July 31. This building is a former CVS Pharmacy store located at the corner of Marbach and West Military Drive. The estimated cost is $350,000 for 2,828 square feet.

Cano Health has been pursuing an aggressive growth strategy and now has more than 50 clinics in Florida. Last August, in an Inc. Magazine article, the Centro Health founder and CEO, Dr. Marlow Hernandez, said he wants the company to become the go-to primary care clinic for patients across the United States.
He said then that he was in negotiations to expand the business to Texas. And during the first week of March 2020, Cano Health launched its efforts to hire upper level personnel for the Texas market; these positions include a health care vice president and a talent acquisition specialist.
Cano Health describes itself on the company website as a “senior care provider for medical, wellness, dental, and pharmaceuticals.”
VBX has logged this as Project ID 2020-281A.
