San Antonio (Bexar Co.) – A 3.1-mile hike and bike trail that would extend to Salado Creek Greenway Trails to Southeast Military Drive is expected to go to bid in November.
A $3 million project, contingency fund included, of the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, the project would extend the Greenway from its present southern terminus at south end of Lions Park Lake in South Side Lions Park East. There are currently five functioning segments of the Salado Creek Greenway; South Side Lions Park East is in Salado Creek-Covington.
During a presentation Tuesday before the Linear Creekway Parks Advisory Board, Vickrey & Associates Inc. project manager Mariya Kret, P.E. explained the northern half of the trail will be along the edge but inside the boundaries of the defunct Pecan Valley Golf Course. This will require contracting for an easement to secure the city’s rights to map a permanent path and commence construction.
“We are working with a consultant that is working with the owner of the golf course,” Kret said of the easement negotiations.
The golf course closed in 2012, but according to Kret, the owners are in the process of re-opening it. Proceeding on the assumption there will eventually be an active golf course was a determining factor in the alignment of the trail and the placement of some type of fencing barrier at certain locations to keep trail users from being struck by flying golf balls, Kret said.
Much of the land south of the golf course is city-owned. However, there are a couple of tracts that will required the establishment of easements or the purchase of land. Plans include the construction of a trailhead by Salado Creek at Southeast Military Drive, across this major arterial from The Republic Golf Course.
The route of the trail extension begins at the floodgate at Lions Park Lake and winds its way along the western banks of the Salado Creek, passing between the creek and new multifamily community project currently under construction, continuing on to East Soutcross Boulevard, where it crosses under the bridge.
Still within the golf course, the trail turns east and crosses one of two bridges that will be provided. It continues toward the easternmost boundary of the course, turns south to the course’s southern boundary, then west and across the second bridge.
The SE Military trailhead will be a parking lot with 32 parking spaces, bike racks, a restroom facility and water fountain.
A 10-foot-wide concrete path will be constructed along the entire length of the trail. It will also include signage and be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.
Construction documents are expected to be completed in October, and the advertisements for bids would go out in November. The bid opening would be in December.
City Council would be presented the recommended contractor for a vote in February and construction would begin in March 2017, Kret said. The project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in March 2018.
