Robinson (McLennan County)–An Alabama-based healthcare company plans to build a freestanding 40-bed rehabilitation hospital in a suburb of Waco.
Encompass Health Corp., headquartered in Birmingham, announced March 18 its plans to construct a 47,000-square-foot hospital that will include a large therapy gym, a suite for daily living activities, a cafeteria, a dining room, pharmacy and courtyard.
Encompass plans to open their hospital in the summer of 2021 on a 7.2-acre parcel at the intersection of Texas Highway Loop 340 and Texas Highway 77.
According to a news release, the hospital will care for patients recovering from various debilitating illnesses and injuries, such as strokes and other neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. The facility will offer 24-hour nursing care as well as physical, occupational and speech therapies.

There’s no information currently available on a construction delivery method. Construction is estimated to cost $15 million. Encompass plans to invest a total of $19.9 million in the project, a figure that includes site improvements and hospital technology.
Robinson City Council voted in February to approve a Chapter 380 program project agreement, which lets the city fund the extension of utilities to the project site.
McLennan County Commissioners voted March 17 to approve a seven-year tax abatement for the project. The tax breaks will range 55%-70%.
The tax abatement agreement calls for construction to be completed no later than Sept. 30, 2021. Encompass agrees to create at least 85 full-time jobs within the first year of hospital operations. VBX members may track this project using ID number: 2020-2797.
The 7.2-acre hospital parcel is part of a 24.5-acre tract that is located in Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) No. 1. The city envisions other commercial uses for the land surrounding the hospital project site.

The Robinson facility will become part of Encompass Health’s nationwide network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and home health and hospice agencies.
Encompass is one of the country’s largest providers of integrative healthcare services, currently operating 24 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in addition to 52 home health and 11 hospice locations in Texas.
“We are excited to bring our rehabilitation services in the greater Waco area through this new, state-of-the-art hospital,” Frank Brown, president of Encompass Health’s southwestern region, said in a news release.
“By delivering a customized and patient-centered approach to care, Encompass Health provides its patients with the therapy, education and confidence they need to maximize their recovery.”
Encompass recently announced plans to build several new rehab hospitals across the nation, including a 40-bed facility in San Angelo, Texas. The company recently finished another round of rehab hospital construction in Lubbock and Katy.
