Cedar Park (Williamson County)–A nationally recognized pediatric hospital system plans to build a $450 million, 360,000-square-foot freestanding hospital in North Austin.

Texas Children’s Hospital, a Houston-based nonprofit health organization, announced May 20 it plans for a new 48-bed children’s facility on a 24-acre site at the northeast corner of North Lake Creek Parkway and Texas Highway 45 near Lakeline Mall. The children’s hospital is projected to open in late 2023.

The new hospital will contain neonatal intensive care, operating rooms, an epilepsy monitoring unit, a sleep center, an emergency center, pediatric intensive care with pediatric subspecialties, acute care, and diagnostic imaging.

Additionally, the new hospital will feature a Texas Children’s Urgent Care facility that will provide on site, labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care, and 1,200 free parking spaces.

Page is the civil architectural firm, and McCarthy Building Cos. is the general contractor.

According to Texas Children’s Hospital officials, construction of the new North Austin facility will use sustainable building materials and techniques. Once it opens, the hospital will produce 400 jobs.

“At Texas Children’s, our breadth and depth of expertise allows us to provide the full-spectrum of health care services which we believe helps improve the overall health and well-being of Austin children, women and families,” Michelle Riley-Brown, executive vice president at Texas Children’s, said in a news release.

Texas Children’s Hospital in late 2019 closed on the purchase of two properties in Austin. The North Lake Creek Parkway plot lies within the larger Presidio development, next to a La Quinta Inn and Suites.

The second property lies within the Estancia development near Interstate 35 and Puryear Road on the South Side.

Texas Children’s Hospital opened its first Austin location in spring 2018, the Urgent Care Westgate facility on South Lamar Boulevard.
