San Angelo (Tom Green County) - Construction will begin later this month on a $7.25 million sports medicine clinic for student athletes at Angelo State University.

Austin-based Lott Brothers Construction Company, the general contractor, will accept bids from subcontractors until noon tomorrow (June 6) for work on new construction of a 27,800-square-foot Shannon ASU Sports Medicine & Clinic.

There are three components to the project. There is an outdated athletic field house that must be demolished. In its place, ASU wants a "Health Clinic for Shannon Health System, and Shannon's Sport Medicine outpatient services for area high school and professional athletes," the summary of work document states.

San Antonio-based O'Connell Robertson is the architect.

According to Angelo State University and Shannon Health, the project was approved in late January. This single-story building will be located adjacent to the Junell Center/Stephens Arena on South Jackson Street.

In a prepared statement, university president Dr. Brian J. May said, "The opportunity to partner with Shannon Health on this new facility and enhanced sports medicine services takes health care to a new level for our students and San Angelo."

The facility was designed to accommodate two radiology rooms, a lab draw room, a 5,000-square-foot sports medicine and physical therapy center, and a 5,000-square-foot area for the ASU Athletics training staff. At a later date, there will also be a Shannon walk-in clinic for family care, ASU said.

The project is expected to reach completion by March 1, 2018.
